When I was a little girl I summered in New Hampshire. Our cottage was named "Birchwood" by my Swedish grandparents.
Living in Sweden, their home was surrounded by white birches. Our cottage in New Hampshire was, as well.
At an early age I fell in love with the birch tree. I loved the way it swayed and bent in the breeze. Groupings of birches would take my breath away. In high school I carved my initials in a birch, along with my first love's initials.
I continue to "carve" initials in my birches, but with a paint brush, not a jackknife. My paintings and prints can be personalized with initials or a significant date, or left alone to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the forest.
"Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away."
