Lyric Couture
Lyric Couture is the "one-off-spring" of Alice B. Fogel,
award-winning clothing designer, sewing sybil & custom clothier,
as well as poet, writer, author & teacher. With multiple degrees
in the arts as well as courses at NYC's Fashion Institute of Technology, she has created costumes for productions at the Kennedy
Center, San Francisco & Houston Operas, Broadway, off-Broadway & film,
as well as for Actors Theatre Playhouse in West Chesterfield, NH, &
held the post of Head of Costuming at Theatre by the Sea in Portsmouth, NH.
Her obsession with sewing & design began with making rock star outfits
for her troll dolls' band, The Cherries, when she was 8 years old, & she
has never looked back since.
She has been a formal member of the Professional Association of Custom
Clothiers, making wedding gowns and other specialty garments, but her true
love is re-fashioning unwanted old materials into unexpectedly desirable new
clothes.
Lyric clothes are made one by one with energy from the wind & sun, almost
exclusively from vintage/pre-loved/repurposed materials. Whatever fancy spin
you put on them for a name, the fact remains that they are used. That's the
whole point—that we are not contributing to the fiber & fashion industry's
perpetual waste, rampant pollution or inequitable wages, or to the local dump—we
are having healthy fun making brand new wearables out of old stuff. So while we
choose materials just as we would for higher-end clothes—for their texture, color,
fiber content & hand—we occasionally let a tiny imperfection exist in our designs.
That's just part of their charm.
Lyric Couture is Ecouture: Ecological Fashion. Poetry in Sewing.
